Passing of Hound Greg Schmalz'72

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Notre Dame Hound, Greg Schmalz'72.

Greg attended Notre Dame as a student from 1968 to 1972. In 1973, Greg would join the teaching staff of Notre Dame until June of 1998 after 25 years of service with the College. Greg spent many hours coaching Hounds in Hockey, Ringette, Soccer, Track & Field, Girls Softball and Cross Country.

Greg was instrumental in the transition of ringette to female hockey at Notre Dame in 1990. This transition paved the way for hundreds of female Hounds to move onto post-secondary hockey opportunities, as well as creating one of the longest running female hockey programs in Canada.

“Greg Schmalz'72 had an authentic devotion to passing on the principles and legacy of Father Athol Murray. This was on display in his interactions with his students & athletes at Notre Dame for 25 years. Greg had a stronger devotion to his family, he and his wife, Norine'68, raised 8 children, (Rebecca'89, Andrea'90, Erin'92, Jennifer'94, Mark'95, Brian'96, Mike'98, Karalyn'00) all of whom graduated as Hounds. Greg was also a major contributor to the parish life of St. Augustine and served on village council for a number of years. He will be missed.” ~ President Rob Palmarin.

Please pray for the repose of Greg’s soul and for his beloved wife and former staff member, Norine Schmalz'68, the kids, grandchildren and all of Greg's family and friends during this very difficult time.
