MONTREAL, Que. - The Notre Dame Hounds Girls Prep Basketball team completed a
demanding three-game weekend at the SLAM Fall Challenge in Montreal, opening the event
with a WNPA victory before battling through a pair of difficult matchups while managing a
significantly shortened roster.
Notre Dame opened the weekend Saturday morning with a 66-53 victory over Victory Academy
of Toronto. The matchup served primarily as a Women's National Preparatory Association
(WNPA) league game while being played as part of the SLAM Fall Challenge.
The Hounds established control early and responded to each Victory push throughout the
game, earning an important league victory and beginning the weekend on a positive note.
Later Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame returned to the floor against Louis-Riel of Ottawa. The
Hounds stayed within striking distance of the Rebelles for much of the contest, spending most
of the game within 8 points despite already beginning to deal with injuries and a shortened
rotation.
As the game progressed, however, injuries continued to impact Notre Dame's depth and
several defensive breakdowns allowed Louis-Riel to create separation. The Rebelles pulled
away late for a 79-47 victory.
The physical toll of Saturday's two games became even more significant heading into Sunday
morning's matchup against the No. 10-ranked Royal Crown - Blue Lions.
With five Hounds unavailable because of injury, Notre Dame entered the game with only seven
available players. Despite the limited roster, the Hounds continued to compete against one of
the country's top-ranked programs before Royal Crown used its depth and speed to secure an
83-56 win.
Head Coach Marc Ffrench said the Hounds are looking forward to seeing both Louis-Riel and
Royal Crown - Blue again later this season with a complete and healthy roster.
“We know we will get another opportunity against both of those teams,” Ffrench said.
“This weekend challenged our depth and forced players into different roles, but those
experiences will help us. We’re looking forward to matching up with Louis-Riel and Royal
Crown again when we have our complete group available.”
The weekend provided Notre Dame with an early-season opportunity to compete against three
strong programs while also gaining valuable experience under difficult circumstances.
Notre Dame leaves Montreal with a 1-2 weekend record, including an important WNPA league
victory, while continuing the early stages of a season that will see the Hounds compete against
many of the top prep programs in Canada
