The College extends its condolences to the McNeill family with the passing of James Duncan McNeill on November 8, 2022 at the age of 91. He was one of the College’s major benefactors and a great friend to Notre Dame through his relationships with Hounds like Gerry Maier ‘46 and the late Bill Mooney ’52 and his wife Lois ‘52. Duncan was inspired by the influence Notre Dame and Père Athol Murray had made on the lives of his friends.
Duncan and his wife Verda were generous in their philanthropy, making significant donations to the areas of education and health. Their contributions to Notre Dame resulted in a major renovation to the now-named Duncan McNeill Arena as well as the establishment of the McNeill Family Bursary, awarded annually to Alberta students who attend Notre Dame to play hockey. The College was honoured to have Duncan visit the campus in 2003 for the dedication of the new arena.
