Triston Mirasty, a Flying Dust First Nation born hockey player said he misses home, but he’s setting his sights on becoming a top-notch hockey player.

This past fall, he started Grade 9 at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, and joined the Bantam AA program at the school. While also being an educational institution and boarding school, Notre Dame is well-known for its strong athletics program.

While home on his school break, the 14-year-old also tried out for Team MLTC this week. His father Jon is a career player as well and attended Wilcox for a semester in his school days.

Mirasty said he’s enjoying the experience thus far on the Notre Dame Hounds team, which is part of the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League.

“I wanted to go to this school to get better at hockey,” he said. “My dad went to the school for a little bit and had good things to say about the program. We practice lots, go to the gym, play lots during the week.”

The 18-team strong league has a North and South division, and the Notre Dame team has played a total of 22 games so far this season. The team is currently sitting at a record of six wins, 14 losses one tie and one overtime loss, and Mirasty has nine points, scoring six goals and three assists.

He said hockey has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember, and his start in Meadow Lake and family inspiration is what keeps him wanting to reach for big goals. He said he’s happy for every opportunity to play, learn and grow in the sport.
“I hope to make it far in hockey, maybe get to the NHL,” he said.

The team will be travelling to the ONEHOCKEY Minnesota Gone Wild Tournament in Minnesota from Jan. 12 to 15.
