Mother Teresa Award – Friend of Notre Dame 2018

Psalm 126 verse 5 states, “those who sow tears will reap with shouts of joy”. This passage is a beautiful promise of one of the 14 works of mercy – the call to comfort those who are in mourning.

There is no doubt that the family of Greg and Wand Metz with daughter Krista and son Nicholas have experienced their share of tears, having to bury three sons (and brothers) at a much too early age.

In 1989, the Metz’ lost their two newborn sons; Joseph and Gary shortly after birth and then in 2007, they lost their 15 year old son Paul, who was attending Athol Murray College at the time, in a tragic car accident.

The members of the College and the village have always admired the way your family has carried yourselves with dignity and grace through these difficult and sorrowful times. Equally, important we have noticed how you have responded through your own personal sorrow to reach out to other families who have also experienced a tragic loss of a son, daughter or loved one.

This year, as all of us journeyed through the mourning, healing and regathering following the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy, the College sensed that now was the time to honor a family who has “comforted others who are mourning”. The Metz family devotion to John 3:16, and the numerous miracles that are connected with those words of our Lord, that you shared with our grade 12’s last week, not only provided hope to others but they have also assisted them with their mourning and recovery. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your example".
