"Step up to the Plate"

Assembly Reflection For Thursday, 2000/9/7 - Terry O'Malley

Our theme for the year is "the Spirit of Strength" and so far, many reflections have centered on that theme. When we discussed this theme at the Grade 11 camping trip, although there were other great possibilities, this one captured the imagination. Strength is such a natural thing for youth as the famous author Joseph Conrad used to exclaim: "Youth, the strength of it, the vigor of it!"

Fr. Tubale in his opening talk mentioned how affirmation creates strength in people by giving them a sense of confidence in themselves. And this is what Jesus did for Saint Peter who, although he was a fine leader, had many faults such as being impulsive and not thinking before he spoke. Our theme artwork, done by Julie Rudrick expresses the famous insight of St. Augustine: " When you O Lord, are our strength, it is strength indeed, but when our strength is our own it is only weakness." Rob Palmarin during our orientation Assembly encouraged that we call upon the 'Holy Spirit' for inspiration and strength to use the gifts we have been given.

Today, however, we will reflect upon the experience of a young woman who finally gave a reflection at her school Assembly. In doing so, she read from scripture on the calling of Saint Peter and how he dropped everything and followed the Lord. For her, that she gained the strength to just speak in front of her peers was like answering a call that Peter received. This is what she said:

"It can be frightening to be asked to step up to the plate. A few years ago a friend encouraged me to lead one of the assemblies at our school. I had been quite happy and comfortable to be a supportive 'team member' by contributing ideas behind the scenes. The thought of actually leading an assembly never crossed my mind.

When the responsibility was dropped in my lap, I was terrified. However, my pal gave me confidence by telling me gently that 'I think you are ready.' And indeed, it was her certainty and trust in my ability that moved me.

I realize now that it had been easier and safer for me to admire the talents of others, rather that take the risk of putting my own to good use.

Let Us Pray;

Heavenly Father, we see in this story how affirmation gives strength. Help us also recognize our talents and have the spirit of strength to use them to help others today and always.
