A Prayer for Middle East Peace

by Matt Mikulic, Grade 12 - 2000/10/18

In 1983, during an Arab-Israeli confrontation in Lebanon, Mother Teresa went to Beirut to see what she could do to help. Many politicians, army officials and even priests were quite skeptical about the effect a 73 year old nun could have on the peace process. However, Mother Teresa mentioned that she was praying to Our Lady to help obtain a cease-fire. Well, the very next day, guess what happened? - a cease-fire! Mother Teresa, is spite of opposition from officials, moved into the battle site immediately and began to administer to the wounded and she helped especially a group of disabled children who were left to fend for themselves in a war zone hospital.

Today, we have renewed fighting in the Middle East. Let Hounds call on Our Lady, Mother Teresa, Saint Francis and all of the saints in heaven to intercede for peace for the whole world but especially in the Middle East. In Jesus' name let us pray the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:

Lord:

Make me an instrument of your PEACE
.

Where there is hatred, let me sow LOVE.

Where there is injury, PARDON.

Where there is doubt, FAITH.

Where there is despair, HOPE

Where there is darkness, LIGHT.

Where there is sadness, JOY

O DIVINE MASTER,

Grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled, as to CONSOLE,

To be understood, as to UNDERSTAND,

To be loved as to LOVE.

For it is in GIVING that we receive,

It is in PARDONING

That we are pardoned,

And it is in dying

That we are born to ETERNAL LIFE
