Class Notes: Rod was a three year Hound that achieved excellence in the classroom and on the ice. An honour roll student for all three of his years at Notre Dame Rod spent his grade 12 year as a Houseleader in the Badger dorm. Playing his bantam, midget and Jr A hockey at Notre Dame Rod participated in 2 Air Canada Cups (now Telus) earning a Gold and a Silver Medal. In 1988, his grade 12 year, he captained the Jr A Hounds and helped Notre Dame win another National title by bringing home the Centennial Cup (now Royal Bank Cup). Rod was drafted in the first round directly out of the SJHL's Notre Dame Hounds and accepted a full scholarship to Michigan State University. Rod turned pro after his freshman year.
On behalf of the entire Notre Dame family we congratulate Rod on an outstanding career in the NHL and this well deserved honour.
Canes to retire Rod Brind’Amour’s number
RALEIGH, N.C. Rod Brind’Amour’s legacy will live on in Carolina.
The Hurricanes announced Thursday that the National Hockey League club’s former captain will have his No. 17 jersey retired on Feb. 18, 2011 prior to a game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Brind’Amour, who played 21 seasons, retired from the NHL on June 30.
There is no image of our franchise more memorable than that of Rod Brind’Amour, our captain, hoisting the Stanley Cup above his head, the emotions from a lifetime of hard work and dedication pouring out of him, said Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford. There is no doubt that Rod’s number belongs in the rafters of the RBC Center, and February 18 will surely be a very special night for our fans and everyone connected with the Hurricanes organization.
The 39-year-old Campbell River native, who was drafted in the first round (ninth overall) by the St. Louis Blues in the 1988 NHL entry draft, scored 452 goals and 732 assists in 1,484 career games with the Blues, Flyers and Hurricanes.
Brind’Amour, who played for Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics and is a two-time winner of the league’s Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward, was acquired by Carolina from Philadelphia on Jan. 23, 2000.
Since the team’s relocation to Carolina from Hartford, Brind’Amour is the Hurricanes’ all-time leader in points (473) and assists (299).
